I'm Phil, an English-speaking proposal photographer based in Paris, trained at SPÉOS and photographing couples here since 2014. I've helped many people from the US and around the world plan their surprise proposal: choosing the right spot, the right time of day and the right way to keep the secret until the very last second.

The proposal itself lasts less than a minute. The surprise, the tears, the laughter, the hug that follows... those are the moments you'll want to see again for the rest of your life. My job is to make sure none of them are missed.

One way to keep your proposal a surprise while still keeping some control over the situation is to propose during a photoshoot. Tell your partner you've booked a couple photoshoot early in the morning and when the moment is right, surprise them with the question.

The advantage: your partner will happily wake up early and dress up for the photos. I can control the background and the angles, so you get the perfect shot. The downside: your partner may suspect something is up, so the surprise may be a little less powerful.

If you want to keep it a true surprise, the random photographer option might be the perfect fit. Take your partner for an early morning walk to Trocadéro and ask a "random" photographer (that's me!) to take a couple of pictures of you both with your phone. When you're ready to propose, I switch to my camera and capture the moment.

This option keeps the surprise intact while giving us some control: I choose where you stand and we can discreetly wait for the area to clear if there are too many people around.

For complete surprise and completely real emotions, the invisible photographer option is the way to go. I brief you in advance on where to stand, how to position yourselves and when to propose and then I capture the moment from a distance.

This option is riskier for the photos: there's no control over the background or the people around you. But it guarantees a real surprise and true emotions.

Before your trip - We plan everything together by email or WhatsApp, so your partner never sees a thing. I suggest the best location and time for your date and season, agree on a discreet signal and send you clear instructions for the day.

On the day - I arrive early to check the light and the crowd and I'm in position before you get there. Once your partner has said yes, we continue with relaxed couple portraits so you have more than the proposal itself.

After - The same day, I send you a sneak peek so you can share the news with family and friends while you're still in Paris. Within a couple of days, you receive the full set in low resolution to choose your favorites. Your final high-resolution edited gallery is delivered within two weeks of your selection.

What is the best time for a surprise proposal in Paris?

Sunrise! The light is soft and golden, iconic places are not that crowded and intimate locations are nearly empty, which makes it much easier to get clean photos.

Will my partner suspect anything?

It depends on the option you choose. With the Random Photographer and Invisible Photographer options, your partner only sees a stranger with a camera. With the Photoshoot Proposal, they know a photoshoot is planned but not why.

How do we plan without my partner finding out?

All our planning happens by email or WhatsApp, directly with you. I send you the meeting point, the timing and a discreet signal, so you just have to follow the plan on the day.

Can we continue with a photoshoot after the proposal?

Yes. Once your partner has said yes, we take relaxed couple portraits nearby, so you leave with photos of the proposal and of the two of you celebrating.

Do you speak English?
